Alptransit (NEAT) Construction Project

The PMI Switzerland Chapter is pleased to announce an unique opportunity to visit the biggest project currently under way in Switzerland! Thanks to our member Jean-Noël Indergand and Fredy Wehrli, it was possible to organize a guided tour on the NEAT construction site at Amsteg. A project manager from Alptransit will hold a speech on the project management aspects of this construction project. We will also have the opportunity to ask questions before we visit the construction site.

Impressions Twenty-three participants gathered on Thursday, 7. October in the Info-Centre of the AlpTransit Gotthard AG (ATG) in Silenen. We were welcomed by Mr. Sieber, head of project and quality management at ATG, to a visit of the NEAT construction site in Amsteg. In his one- hour presentation Mr. Sieber gave us an overview of the project (visit www.alptransit.ch for the details of this big project) as well as an insight into the project and risk management processes and guidelines. (The presentation can be ordered on disc by Jim Greene). This was followed by a short film about the drilling machines and the miner's work.

Then the fun part of the event started. After instruction of the life saving equipment, the whole group re-located to the construction site at Amsteg. There we got our tunnel equipment consisting of a helmet, yellow rubber boots, security jacket, life saving equipment and earphones. After a short ride by bus to the tunnel entrance we entered the tunnel train which brought us about 2km into the tunnel. In the tunnel it was loud, dusty and quite warm but very impressive. Equipped with the earphones and following our guide we explored the tunnel and watched the miners at work. Deeply impressed of the size and scope of this undertaking we listened to the explanations of our guide who gave us many interesting facts about what happens at the construction site. After around 45 minutes we left the tunnel by train again. Many of us were happy to see the sky and to breathe fresh air again. After changing clothes and a short refreshment we waved goodbye with the good feeling of having spent the afternoon with an uncommon experience.
